Knoxville, TENN - What changes when art becomes participatory—and viewers take on an active role?
Redefining the traditional gallery experience, the Mystery Art League invites patrons to think, search, and solve. Its latest exhibit blends fine art, narrative storytelling, and puzzle design into an immersive participatory experience.
Entitled “Entry Earned: A Father’s Test,” this interactive exhibit is a collaboration between artist Randy L. Purcell and puzzle designer Tim Buchanan.
“At the center of every Mystery Art League experience is discovery,” says Randy. "Clues are embedded throughout the artwork and its physical components, including coded symbols and layered imagery that gradually reveal details and guide participants toward the story’s conclusion."

Through its game and narrative elements, the artwork takes on new life and invites deeper audience engagement.
Created initially for the 2026 ArtPrize competition in Grand Rapids, MI, this installation includes a large sixteen-panel centerpiece—made in Randy’s signature encaustic process—along with corresponding elements.
Participants uncover a narrative through written letters telling the story of a young man tasked with solving a puzzle to win his fiancée’s hand in marriage.
“The goal is to create a shared, meaningful experience,” Randy says. “We want patrons to slow down, observe the work closely, and step into a sense of exploration.”

“Now more than ever, collectors and art lovers are looking for art that goes deeper than just visual appeal,” says Denise Hood, owner of The District Gallery and Framery. “As digital and AI-generated imagery becomes more prevalent, there is a growing appreciation for artwork rooted in process and personal narrative. With this interactive piece, Randy does just that. Each panel carries the visual imprint of its making, and combined with the narrative element, it’s a breath of fresh air.”
“Entry Earned: A Father’s Test” will have its opening night reception on June 13, from 2 p.m. - 5 p.m. EST. The exhibit will be on display at The District Gallery & Framery from June 13 - July 31. For further information about the Mystery Art League, be sure to visit its website and social media.
